The ancient Sumerians of Mesopotamia recognized about 5,100 years ago that the smallest number divisible by 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 is 60. Sixty is a highly composite superior number because it is also more divisible than any other positive integer less than that (it also divides by 10, 12, 15, 20, 30, and 60)! The Babylonians applied this sexagesimal counting method (using a single number of digits from 0 to 60) to astronomy, circular geometry, calendar, and time: it is also more simply known as Base 60.
